THE SAINT GERMAIN AREA (6th district)

PRESENTATION

Saint Germain des Près and its church of the XIth century are characteristic of this area called the Old Paris. Its streets are full of past : there, you could take your time and enjoy a special atmosphere at a table outside a café. The Café de Flore was once frequented by Jean-Paul Sartre where' as Boris Vian prefered the Café Tabou and, Ernest Hemingway the Café des Deux Magots... Many writers, musicians, peinters loved this area and walked around its boulevards : it was the Paris of the artists.

LE PALAIS BOURBON

The Bourbon Palace (Palais Bourbon) houses the French National Assembly. There you could "meet" the French deputies (when they sit at their benches).
- The Lassay townhouse (Hôtel de Lassay) -next to the Bourbon Palace (Palais Bourbon)- is reserved to the President of the French National Assembly. You could visit this Greek style building for its beautiful library decorated by Delacroix.

L'INSTITUT DE FRANCE
Address : 23, quai de Conti - Metro : Pont Neuf (line 7)

The Institute of France (Institut de France) is composed of 5 academies (the most famous one is the Académie française). It is housed by a palace financed by Mazarin.

L'ECOLE NATIONALE DES BEAUX ARTS
Address : 14, rue Bonaparte - Metro : Saint Germain des Prés (line 4)

The National School of Fine Arts (Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts) is located on the Malacquais bank.

LE MUSEE D'ORSAY
Address : Rue Bellechasse - Metro : Solférino (line 12) - RER : Musée d'Orsay (line c)

This museum was, formerly, a train station. Today, it houses a huge collection of paintings from the Impressionist period and, more generally, works of art from the second half of the XIXth century until the beginning of the XXth century. On its roof, you could enjoy the view from its Café des Hauteurs.

- The Currency Museum (Musée de la Monnaie)
Address : Quai de Conti - Metro : Odéon (lines 4, 10)

It is full of currencies collections from all around the world, as well as making shops.

- The Legion of Honour Museum (Musée de la Légion d'Honneur)
Address : 2, rue de Bellechasse - Metro : Solférino (line 12)

Dedicated to the national rewards for bravery, this museum is unique in the world. It houses lot of things that belong to the Order of Chivalry.

Other things to see in that area

- The Saint Joseph des Carmes chapel

- The Odeon Square (Place de l'Odéon) and its statue of Danton -near the Odeon Theatre (Théâtre de l'Odéon)-

- Its shops : it is a very chic area where fashion -and more precisely, haute couture- has an important place (with Armani, Louis Vuitton, ...). It is the paradise of the shoppers !
